Fred and Della Cruz have been making these wonderful figurative baskets for a number of years. Using a foundation of bear grass wrapped with yucca (white and green) and devilsclaw (black), and utilizing their amazing imagination, they continually surprise us with the next whimsical creation.
Two images of an “Eagle Man” which Fred tells us appears in Tohono O’Odham stories. 8 inches tall and $160. A roadrunner, 6 inches tall and about 7 inches from tail to beak. $120.
Three saguaros that Fred just brought in. The first has a basket and a rattle. Just over 5.5 inches tall and $95. The next one has a flat basket and rattle under it. 6 inches tall and sold. A jack rabbit with an attitude, resting under a saguaro. 7.5 inches tall. $120.
A saguaro cowboy, wearing leather chaps and a removable hat. 7 inches tall and $160. The bronco rider seems to be hanging in there. The saguaro behind him is 9 inches tall. $185. Last in this row are two ducks wearing hats. They are approx. 8.5 inches from beak to tail. $95 each (one on the right is SOLD).
Next is a bighorn sheep walking by a small saguaro 7.5 inches tall and $158. Last is a woman carrying a basket on her head. The basket is fully woven and removable. 9.25 inches tall and $220.
A Tohono O’odham woman with a traditional giaha or carrying basket. 8.5 inches tall and 10 inches wide include carrying basket. Two miniature baskets are being carried in the giaha and are included. $320. Another woman with a carrying basket. This one is just under 8 inches tall and $160. Next is a wagon parked next to a saguaro. The saguaro is 7 inches tall. $180.
More creatures and items next to saguaros. On the left is a bee with a flower. The saguaro is 10 inches tall $275. This last one I’m sure has some story behind it. A cowboy hat, and cowboy boots…but no cowboy. 6.5 inches tall and $120.
