AYA is the Hopi word for the gourd rattles used by the katsinas during their ceremonies. They are also given as gifts to young boys (along with bow and arrows, tops and stick balls).

From left to right: The first rattle in the photo has a Taawa or Sun on the top. By Sean Sekaquaptewa, it is 11 inches long and SOLD. Next is a Hahay’iwuuhti or Grandmother katsina aya. 11.25 inches long and $125. The third rattle has a Katsina Mana on one side and a cloud motif on the opposite side. 10.25 inches long and $160. The turquoise rattle was made by Manuel Chavarria, 6.5 inches long and is $52. The red, black and white one is 7.5 inches long and $52. Last in the row is a Kowaako or Rooster rattle by Jack Antone measuring 8.25 inches long and $75. (ALL IN SANTA FE)

 

A Mudhead, 11 inches tall, $125. This rattle is the style traditionally carried by the Koyemsi or Miudheads, is 12 inches long and $125. A large Ahöla rattle 20 inches high with turkey and parrot feathers. $160. (ALL in SANTA FE)
