Though figurative pottery has a long history in the Pueblos, storyteller figures are recent, going back to about 1963 when Helen Cordero of Cochiti made the first one, in honor of her father, Santiago Quintana, a traditional storyteller. Most storyteller figurines come from Cochiti and Jemez, with Jemez home to the greatest number.

Above is a wonderful storyteller by Snowflake Flower (Stephanie Rhoades - 1931-2003) Made about 1990. It is 6 7/8 inches high and $525.

By Dorothy Herrera this male storyteller is 2 inches high and $75. (Santa Fe) This charming polychrome turtrle was made by Margaret (1936-2018) and Luther (1911-1987) Gutierrez. They were a brother and sister team from San Ildefonso Pueblo. 3.5 inches long. $240. (TUCSON)

Felicia Fragua came in with her daughter today (June 14) and brought these. The first two photos are front and back of the same figure. She recently discovered a source for green mineral paint. This one is unusual for her as she polished the back. 4 5/8 inch high, $240. Next is turtle bearing mother and child. 3.5 inches high. $125. . (ALL IN SANTA FE)

Both of these were made by Clifford Kim Fragua. A mother and infant atop a white buffalo, just over 7 inches long and $250 each. The Storyteller with two children is 4 3/8 inches high and $125. (Both in Santa Fe)
