Spirit in the Stone-a Handbook of Southwest Indian Animal Carvings and Beliefs

By Mark Bahti, was published by Treasure Chest Publications   (1-800-969-9558)   and released February 1st of this year.   154 pages, profusely illustrated in all color photographs, it discusses some of the beliefs and practices of the use of fetishes among many Southwest Indian tribes --not just the Zuni-- and includes stories about many animals that are carved, but which are not fetishes in many Indian religious traditions.   It includes a glossary of materials and charts which compare and contrast early European and Indian beliefs regarding colors, stones and animals.   The price for the book is $15.95, including shipping and postage:   $17.00





Southwestern Indian Weaving

  The cover is deceptive: this book includes the basketry of tribes in the Southwest and Pueblo embroidery and even quilting.   It even includes a brief discussion of prehistoric weaving traditions.   Beautifully illustrated with photographs by Bruce Hucko, this is an excellent introduction to the weaving traditions of Southwest Indian Tribes.   $8.95


The Navajo Sandpainting Art

  Written by Eugene Baatsoslanii Joe and Mark Bahti.   In a new format and retitled A Guide to Navajo Sandpaintings it has been revised and expanded with many new images.   It discusses and illustrates both traditional and contemporary work and provides the background of Navajo religious thought necessary to full appreciating Navajo sandpainting art.   Now 64 pages and   $9.95





Pueblo Stories and Storytellers

Written by Mark Bahti in 1987, this revised edition came out a few years ago and remains popular.   It includes some of the history of the Pueblo storyteller tradition, a brief discussion on how they are made and then stories from the oral traditions of pueblos that make storyteller figures, accompanied by photos of those figures.   56 pages.   $12.95


Southwestern Indians

A compilation of three books, written by Tom Bahti   (beginning in 1966):   Southwestern Indian Arts and Crafts, Southwest Indian Tribes and Southwest Indian Ceremonials, that together have sold over a million copies to wide acclaim.   They were updated, revised and expanded by his son and published together,   for the first time in 1997,  in a hardbound edition,   a total of   216 pages.     $39.95
