![]() Lena’s grandmother was Arapahoe from Oklahoma.   Her grandfather Teddy Weahkee (1890-1965) was Zuni.   His daughters were the first women to carve at Zuni (beginning about 1965).   His eldest daughter (Edna Leki) is Lena’s mother.   Lena is the first Zuni carver to be juried in to the SWAIA annual Indian Market.   Her children Leland and Evalena also carve.   She learned by watching her grandfather work. |

These five were carved by Jimmy Yawakia. Born at Zuni in 1963, he is a member of the Frog and
Turkey’s Child clans.   He was an EMT for 25 years, carving (mostly in cottonwood at first) to
relieve the stress of his work.   After retiring he began to carve full-time in addition to his
volunteer activities with the Pueblo and its religious obligations.   Since then he has returned
to school (UNM) to study health information systems. |
![]() This is a Navaho kehtan or "talking" prayer stick of banded serpentine, one figure is male and the other fermale.   This type serves as protection among other functions and my 'singer's (hatathli or "medicine men) carry them.   By David Yazzie, Navajo.   4 inches long overall.   $36. |
